Atomic bomb exhibition held in Belgium - News - NHK WORLD - English

引用

An exhibition on the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is being held in a city in western Belgium where chemical weapons were used during World War One.

The exhibition began on Friday at a museum in Ypres, which is known as a place that experienced the first massive chemical weapons attack. The city has been deepening ties with Hiroshima.

The exhibition is aimed at letting people know about the horror of war and weapons ahead of the centenary of the end of World War One.

Hajime Hayashi, the Japanese ambassador to Belgium, said at a ceremony to mark the opening of the exhibition that atomic bombs were used for attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki 27 years after the use of chemical weapons in Ypres. He said the memories of these events should be shared.

Items displayed at the exhibition include pictures showing the landscapes of the 2 Japanese cities after the atomic bombings, and personal belongings of victims.

Origami cranes folded by elementary school children in Ypres were also displayed with notes written in Dutch.
